The Homestead Town Hall Museum is the original town hall of Homestead. Opened in 1917 it was the first city building opened after incorporation in 1913. It housed the fire department and police department as well. The other departments were moved as the City grew although it remained the City Hall until the mid-1970s. The small museum was established in 1994 as part of recovery from Hurricane Andrew. The small historic building houses photographs and many exhibits with the most recognizable of the 1924 LeFranc fire engine.
Prior to COVID, it was open to the public with no charge Wed-Sat 1:00-5:00 p.m. During closure work continued with cataloging a large back log of artifacts and receiving other items of local historical importance. The primary need is for docents to be trained to give short tours of the museum Wed-Sat. When there are no visitors, assistance with sorting and cataloging artifacts can be done.
Due to the nature of the work, it is not suitable for students. It is an opportunity to learn of the unique history of the City and surrounding area. Volunteers are asked to be available for one afternoon during those days.
