Join us for our Outdoor Volunteer Day at Abalone Cove Reserve! You will help with enhancing habitat by planting native shrubs, removing invasive weeds, watering native plants and more! Your efforts will help restore this habitat for wildlife as well as create a beautiful place for the community to enjoy!

Volunteer Roles & Responsibilities

Typical volunteer roles include planting, invasive species removal, and site preparation.

This event will meet at the entrance of Abalone Cove Reserve: 5970 Palos Verdes Dr South. If you arrive before 9am sharp, please park at the Annie's Stand entrance of Abalone Cove, located just north of the regular park entrance.

Please use caution when entering and exiting this area. This entrance is right before the main entrance if you are coming from Hawthorne.

We will be working outdoors, so please wear closed-toed shoes, sun protection and be sure to bring drinking water and a snack.

Masks are required and volunteers must maintain 6ft distance duiring volunteer activities.

Volunteers under the age of 18 will need to bring and have signed by a parent/guardian a Volunteer Agreement & Release for Minors. The form can be found on L.A. Works website Q&A section.

Mission Statement

The mission of the Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy (PVPLC) is to "preserve land and restore habitat for the education and enjoyment of all."

Description

The Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy (PVPLC) manages over 1600 acres of open space on the Palos Verdes Peninsula, and two nature centers with native plant demonstration gardens. The PVPLC engages volunteers in the development and

maintenance of native plant gardens in order to demonstrate how gardening with native plants is beneficial for the environment. The Native Plant Garden Intern will work under the direction of the Garden Manager and Stewardship Associate to learn about native plant gardening practices to enhance the visual aesthetic of the White Point Native Plant Garden in San Pedro. Tasks will include pruning, mulching, trail repairs, and planting shrubs. All skills will be taught by Garden Manager and tools will be provided.

REQUIREMENTS

Currently enrolled in a college or university as a sophomore, junior, senior, or graduate student

Experience with horticulture, gardening, or native plants is a plus

Ability to work outdoors all day, lift 40 pounds, and work in a team band individually

This is a paid internship requiring a minimum of 6 hours per week in the garden for 3-month intervals (13 weeks total).

Summer session: June-August
