About Teach My Kid to Read

Teach My Kid to Read (TMKTR) seeks an energetic and engaged nonprofit leader to lead a new board of directors. TMKTR is a nonprofit with a mission to provide librarians, parents, caregivers, and anyone interested in literacy education with the tools to help all kids learn to read. TMKTR launched its first initiative in 2019, working through public libraries to help more families of early and striving readers access appropriate resources. Working through the public libraries, TMKTR identified a gap in the market that they began to fill through professional development, access to resources, community outreach and literacy programming with library systems and communities.

TMKTR has identified the following items as important to a board leader:

• Nonprofit experience as a leader
• Board experience
• Financial experience
• Located on the east coast or willing to travel occasionally
• A passion for literacy and reading
• Hands-on
• Energetic/high energy
• Willing to devote the necessary time
• Promotes the organization to the best of its ability on social media, etc.
• Encourages donations
• Work as a co-pilot with the Executive Director
• A bridge between organization and board

About the Board

TMKTR board members meet every other month. Some board members serve in specific chair roles such as volunteer and marketing. Nearly all board members are new since the current board was mainly formed in spring 2021. Here is the link to the current listing of board members. All board members are passionate about helping all kids, including kids with dyslexia, learn to read.

Time Requirements

The board president should plan on an average of two hours per week once they are onboarded. Initially, the time will be much more significant as the board president learns about the organization and board.
