Penta Medical Recycling, a rapidly growing nonprofit, seeks a team of part-time administrative and research volunteers to support administrative workflow and efficiency. These positions will assist the Penta leadership team, helping to support the key administrative and operations functions with tasks including:

Research: collect qualitative and quantitative data on the limb-loss/limb difference population in each of Penta’s countries of operation (currently 15 countries). Research will focus on quantifying the limb-loss/limb-difference population in each country, determining the cause of limb-loss, risk factors driving cause of amputation, and effect of limb-loss on families/communities/economies. The research will also aim to assess the state of healthcare resources, treatments, and services available as it pertains to individuals of limb-loss in our countries of work. Similar research will be carried out for North America, assessing which states/regions of the US/Canada have the highest rates of limb-loss, access to healthcare services, while also researching all P&O (prosthetic and orthotic) clinics in the US.

Social media: craft a social media strategy and engage with Penta’s users through all available social media channels. Create unique and interesting/informative posts and content that will engage different audiences visiting Penta’s website and channels. This role will also include the creation of printed materials and digital assets for distribution to a variety of audiences.

Communications/outreach: communicate and call a vast network of OP clinics to coordinate the donation of prosthetic devices. This role will include running limb drives throughout the US, communicating with amputee support group leaders, and networking with clinicians.

We are looking for a team of volunteers to support these functions and will assign responsibilities to volunteers based on their experience, skills, and interests. Overall, ideal candidates will be organized, detail oriented, have the ability to multitask in a dynamic environment, and have the desire to contribute to a global, social good endeavor.

This opportunity is remote, although occasional in-person meetings may be required.

Mission Statement

Penta repurposes high-quality, used prosthetic limbs discarded in the US and provides them to amputees in need in low-and-middle income countries, helping them regain physical, social, and economic mobility.

Description

Penta Medical Recycling was founded by university students in 2016 to bring high quality, low cost prosthetic care to low-and middle-income countries while repurposing what would otherwise be considered medical waste in the United States. The idea came out of the realization that 85-95% of the world’s amputees lack proper prosthetic care while thousands of functional but slightly outdated prostheses are being replaced in the United States every year.

At Penta, we found that we could resolve these two problems simultaneously by collecting and repurposing used prosthetic equipment in the United States. Penta Medical Recycling formally incorporated as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization in 2018, and has since turned into a global operation working with government health organizations, private and public healthcare institutions, and other nonprofit groups based in the US and overseas. Penta’s operations have expanded to 16 different countries across 6 regions of the world and continues to explore opportunities for expansion. Penta continues to receive communications from new partners each week, a true testament to the growing need of Penta’s services.
