Cooks are ESSENTIAL to keeping Lawrence Community Shelter guests fed while they are staying at the shelter! All cooks will be trained by staff and may work alongside staff, depending on skill level. All experience levels welcome! All guests at Lawrence Community Shelter are preparing to be housed from the moment they arrive. We need caring community members like YOU to make sure our guests receive nutritious meals while they are in a challenging time of their lives.
Volunteers can either cook only or they can stay to serve the meals.
To sign up, please complete the sign-up form at: https://www.lawrenceshelter.org/volunteer/ .

Mission Statement
Grounded in human rights and social justice, our mission is to advance compassionate solutions for people facing homelessness through advocacy, shelter, and housing.
Description
The Lawrence Community Shelter (LCS) is the only emergency homeless shelter serving Lawrence and Douglas County in Kansas. In 2021, LCS created a new Housing Team based on Housing First Principles to provide long-term impact in our community beyond shelter. The Housing Team includes an Inreach Manager, Housing Navigator, and Housing Stabilization Manager. When people arrive at LCS, they meet with the Inreach Manager first to get any documents they’re missing. Then they go to the Housing Navigator to find housing and get help with the application process. Finally, they work with the Housing Stabilization Manager to get resources, supports, and referrals to make sure they stay housed. When people stay housed-when they have stability-they don’t end up back at the shelter. Instead, they begin their journey to a positive future!
