ORGANIZATION: U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service

St. Catherine Creek National Wildlife Refuge is located along the Mississippi River just south of Natchez, Mississippi. It is well known for the thousands of wading birds, waterfowl, and forest birds, which utilize the dense flooded areas, swamps, bottomland forests, and uplands. Bayou Cocodrie is just across the river in Ferriday, Louisiana, and is comprised mainly of forested bottomlands and managed wetlands. These volunteer positions are primarily located at St. Catherine Creek, with one volunteer position available at Bayou Cocodrie during hunting season.

We are seeking individuals willing to volunteer throughout the year, in flexible, six-week rotations, with longer terms possible. We will consider couples if we can find an appropriate position for your partner. Start and end dates are negotiable, and longer terms are negotiable. We are primarily looking for SPRING/SUMMER/EARLY FALL volunteers at this time. To clarify the days of the week expected, the volunteer is expected to work a minimum of 4 days per week.

Groundskeeper/Trails Technician:

Repair/maintain recreational trails, perform basic landscaping (mowing, tree trimming, weed-eating, gardening), repair/clean signs, erect signs, paint signs, repair boardwalks, decks, and fencing, litter cleanup, and miscellaneous other tasks relating primarily to working with wood, earth, and plants. This will require experience using a variety of power tools and hand tools. On rainy days, this volunteer can work inside a large maintenance yard and organize/clean tools & equipment. Miscellaneous tasks include working independently or with others to move large items, driving to town to pick up supplies (e.g., lumber, parts, tools). The volunteer would also assist refuge staff or other volunteers in completing larger projects that require more than one person.

HOUSING:

RV pads with electric, water, and sewer hookups are available at both refuges with a minimum of 180 hours of work for a six-week minimum term (30 hours per week) per resident. Due to the remote locations of the refuges, cellular phone service is not guaranteed, but is available by the office and is somewhat available at the RV site. Inquire with the refuge manager about other on-site housing options, or if housing is not needed at all. Sorry, no pets are allowed due to wildlife considerations.

About U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service

Location:

5275 Leesburg Pike, MS: NWRS Visitor Services, Bailey’s Crossroads, VA 22041, US

Mission Statement

Working with others to conserve, protect and enhance fish, wildlife and plants and their habitats for the continuing benefit of the American people.

Description

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is the premier government agency dedicated to the conservation, protection, and enhancement of fish, wildlife and plants, and their habitats. We are the only agency in the federal government whose primary responsibility is the conservation and management of these important natural resources for the American public.

The agency includes both the National Wildlife Refuge System and the National Fish Hatchery System.

The Service's origins date back to 1871 when Congress established the U.S. Fish Commission to study the decrease in the nation’s food fishes and recommend ways to reverse that decline. (More on our history below.) Today, we are a diverse and largely decentralized organization, employing about 8,000 dedicated professionals working out of facilities across the country.
