Save to Favorites

ORGANIZATION: 826LA

Quick Overview: We are looking for lots of new volunteers to help support our students for the upcoming quarters!

Mission: 826LA is a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting students ages 6 to 18 with their creative and expository writing skills, and to help teachers inspire their students to write. Our services are structured around our understanding that great leaps in learning can happen with one-on-one attention, and that strong writing skills are fundamental to future success.

Impact: 826LA provides tutoring and creative writing programs for thousands of Los Angeles students each year. Volunteers are needed to work directly with our students as tutors, mentors, role models, and cheerleaders.

Volunteer Role & Responsibilities (Currently offering a mixture of virtual and in-person sessions):

AFTER-SCHOOL TUTORING (In-person at our Echo Park location or Mar Vista location)

Four days a week during the school year, 826LA is packed with neighborhood students who come in after school for free one-on-one tutoring in all subject areas. Daily writing prompts are posted for students when they complete their homework, and reading--silent and aloud--is a standard part of every student's experience in this program.

FIELD TRIPS

Up to four times a week, we welcome into our writing labs an entire public school classroom for a morning of high-energy learning. In our most popular field trip for elementary school students, Storytelling & Bookmaking, students write, illustrate, and bind their own books in a little over two hours. We also offer choose-your-own-adventure field trips for middle school students, screenwriting field trips for high school students, and more--including custom-designed field trips.

WORKSHOPS

All year round, we offer free workshops designed to foster creativity and strengthen writing skills in a wide variety of areas, from the playful to the practical. All workshops are project-based and taught by experienced, accomplished professionals.

IN-SCHOOLS & COLLEGE ACCESS

Volunteers help HS students in our Writers' Room, at other school sites, and during college access weekend events work on curriculum-based assignments, craft personal statements for college, and draft essays for Young Authors' Book Project.

Requirements: Must attend Volunteering 101 training and complete a background check.

Locations: We have two locations from which to choose. We have one location in Mar Vista and another at Echo Park.

Benefits: The opportunity to work with local students and support community education!

Mission Statement

826LA is a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting students ages 6 to 18 with their creative and expository writing skills, and to helping teachers inspire their students to write. Our services are structured around the understanding that great leaps in learning can happen with one-on-one attention, and that strong writing skills are fundamental to future success. With this in mind, we provide after school tutoring, reading and creative writing workshops, in-schools projects, and field trips! All of our programs are challenging and enjoyable, and ultimately strengthen each student's power to express ideas effectively, creatively, confidently, and in their individual voice. We have two brick and mortars in Mar Vista and Echo Park, as well as three Writers Rooms at Roosevelt High School, at Manual Arts High School, and at Venice High School.

We have a high need for volunteers to support our day time Field Trips and In-Schools programs. You can help facilitate brainstorming sessions and share-outs, type up student ideas, and support the editing process.
