About Ford House

Location:

1100 Lake Shore Road, Grosse Pointe Shores, MI 48236, US

Mission Statement

The Edsel & Eleanor Ford House experience is an authentic witness to the past that inspires, educates, and engages visitors through exploration of its unique connections to design, history, and the environment while celebrating family traditions and community relationships.

Description

Edsel & Eleanor Ford House was the home of Edsel Ford--only child of Ford Motor Company founder, Henry Ford, and president of Ford Motor Company from 1918 to 1943. He and his wife Eleanor were cultural, social and economic leaders in an era of great optimism, as well as a turbulent time of economic depression and world war. They built their dream home along the shores of Lake St. Clair, at a place known locally as Gaukler Pointe. Their impressive yet unpretentious home is where they raised and nurtured their four children - Henry II, Benson, Josephine and William - in a safe and loving environment. It reflects their love of family as well as their mutual passion for art and quality design.

Since opening to the public in 1978, hundreds of thousands of visitors have visited Edsel & Eleanor Ford House to marvel at the extraordinary home and collection of original antiques and art; to stroll the 87-acres of beautiful lakefront grounds; and to attend special events, classes and lectures.
