Volunteer Job Description: Organizer (Green shirt)

Summary and Organizational Impact: This volunteer is responsible and receives credit for supporting the Norfolk Animal Care Center’s staff in their efforts to daily obtain (and maintain) a great first impression on visitors. This volunteer’s efforts will directly influence the organization’s reputation for being a clean, safe shelter for the city’s homeless and helpless animals. Duties will include attending to the shelter’s housekeeping and/or grounds maintenance needs. Does not include any animal handling. This position is great for someone who prefers working "behind the scenes"!

Reports to: Customer service representatives, Animal Care Staff, Kennel Supervisors, and Volunteer & Outreach Coordinator

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Sweeping and mopping the visitor interaction rooms, multipurpose room, & volunteer lounge.
  • Collecting trash litter & toys from the play yards and shelter property.
  • Transferring newspaper donations from the front lobby collection to appropriate storage areas.
  • Shredding newspapers for the puppy kennels & opening newspapers for puppies/cats.
  • Collecting, sorting, and putting away donations.
  • Washing, drying, folding laundry. Washing, drying, and putting away dishes.
  • Washing and putting away kennels and carriers.

Requirements:

  • 16-17 years of age must have parent/legal guardian present and volunteering alongside.
  • 18 years and older may volunteer independently.
  • Willing to assist with both indoor and outdoor chores, regardless of weather or temperature.
  • Able to follow instructions.
  • Able to accept constructive criticism and can be trusted to apply corrective measures when suggested by staff.

Training

  • Attendance to Volunteer Orientation.
  • Complete Training Checklist with a designated trainer.

Time Commitment:

  • Prefer a weekly commitment.
  • Those who are unable to commit to a weekly shift will be able to pick up vacant shifts as they become available.

The Norfolk Animal Care Center is the municipal animal shelter for the city of Norfolk, Virginia. We accept stray and owner-relinquished animals, as well as animals that have been resuced by Animal Control due to neglect and/or abuse.
