Volunteer Job Description: AM Cats & Small Animals (green shirt)

Summary and Organizational Impact: This volunteer is responsible and is to credit for getting our cats’ and small animals’ day starting off on a positive note! This volunteer will prepare the cat and small animals adoption area for opening to the public. Duties include feeding the animals and sanitizing their condos/enclosures, and any animals in the adoption area.

Reports to: Animal Care Staff, Kennel Supervisors, and the Volunteer & Outreach Coordinator.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Performing the following tasks for all cats and small animals in the adoption area.

  • Feeding (and following any posted guidelines regarding special diets and/or feeding protocols)
  • Cleaning and/or deep-cleaning condos or enclosures when there has either been adopted or has been relocated to another kennel/area.
  • Putting away the supplies area after cleaning is complete.
  • Providing enrichment for the cats and small animals after cleaning is complete.

Requirements:

  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Must have excellent attention-to-detail and multi-tasking skills.
  • Must be able to follow instructions.
  • Once trained, must be able to carry out duties with minimal supervision from staff and/or other volunteers.
  • Must be able to effectively communicate observations and/or animal needs to staff using the Infirmary message board, or verbally in the event of an emergency.
  • Able to accept constructive criticism and can be trusted to apply corrective measures when suggested by staff.
  • Able to stay calm in a frequently changing, emotionally charged environment with cats who sometimes have a variety of challenging behaviors.

Training:

  • Attendance to Volunteer Orientation.
  • Complete Training Checklist with a designated trainer.

Time Commitment:

  • Prefer a weekly commitment.
  • Those who are unable to commit to a weekly shift will be able to pick up vacant shifts as they become available.

The Norfolk Animal Care Center is the municipal animal shelter for the city of Norfolk, Virginia. We accept stray and owner-relinquished animals, as well as animals that have been resuced by Animal Control due to neglect and/or abuse.
