Yiya is looking for someone interested in offering their skills and time to support Yiya's impact, and/or to gaining experience with a non-profit, fundraising, and/or supporting a first-of-its kind education platform for rural youth in Uganda! The tasks would include researching opportunities (grants, events, partnerships) that are well aligned to our mission and projects, as well as preparing grant applications and proposals. We use FundsForNGOs and Philantropia, and you would have access to their courses as well! We need someone with excellent writing skills and computer literacy, who is responsive and can meet deadlines while working independently. The volunteer can be located anywhere, and will be in communication with team members based in the US and in Uganda. If it is of interest, we would also love support with our social media, newsletters, and other marketing. We would prefer someone who can make a 6 month minimum commitment.

Mission Statement

Yiya works to develop resilience and creative problem solving in African youth through experiential STEM education. We aim to create the next generation of African innovators and inventors by teaching young people to use the engineering design process to apply science and math topics from school to solve real problems in their local communities.

Description

In response to school closures in Uganda as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, Yiya created the offline learning app Yiya AirScience in order to provide our interactive STEM courses to youth who did not have access to internet or smart phones, especially last mile populations in rural areas. We teach students the engineering design process as they build a technology to solve a problem in their community, with the goal of learning how to creatively solve problems they face in their every day lives, and even learn to establish a business and earn income with the technology they build. Yiya AirScience has taught students to build solar food dryers to preserve fresh produce, and solar cells to power a light bulb. We design the technologies to be built with resources students in rural areas have available to them. In 2022, we are working to improve the experience for learners to increase the number of students who successfully complete a course, and make improvements on the platform in order to host client organizations to share their own curriculum. As of January 2022 we have 51,000 users on the AirScience platform.
