ORGANIZATION: 826LA

We are looking for volunteers to support our students' creative writing skills!

826LA is a non-profit writing and tutoring center with four locations: centers in Mar Vista and in Echo Park, and satellite locations at Roosevelt High School and Manual Arts High School. We provide completely free writing and tutoring programs for students, teachers, and schools in our community -- programs that rely on the altruism and help of our amazing group of intergenerational volunteers. Currently, because of COVID-19, we have shifted most of our programs to virtual. Our tutoring program is the only opportunity in person at the moment as of January 2022.

Volunteers are needed for projects during the week and in the mornings, afternoons, and evenings for 1 to 2 hours. You don't need to be an artist or a professional in creative writing to support our students. We'd love to get you involved in:

- After School & Evening Tutoring (in person at Echo Park or Mar Vista)
- Field Trips
- Workshops
- In Schools

You can learn more about each of these 826LA Programs at https://826la.org/programs/ and our COVID-19 protocols at https://826la.org/visiting/.

All volunteers must attend a Volunteering 101 orientation (Sign up at https://826la.org/volunteer/), get a Live Scan background check, submit a TB test letter of clearance if working in the in-schools program, and fill out a simple application before working with our students. We require no previous teaching experience, just your energy and enthusiasm to turn our sessions into safe, productive, encouraging, and creative environments in which to explore writing, reading, and everything in-between. We'd love to have you!

You can find all Volunteering 101 dates at 826LA.org/volunteer. Once you decide on a date, please send an RSVP email to volunteerteam@826la.org.

About 826LA

Location:

1714 W. Sunset Blvd., LOS ANGELES, CA 90026, US

Mission Statement

826LA is a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting students ages 6 to 18 with their creative and expository writing skills, and to helping teachers inspire their students to write. Our services are structured around the understanding that great leaps in learning can happen with one-on-one attention, and that strong writing skills are fundamental to future success. With this in mind, we provide after school tutoring, reading and creative writing workshops, in-schools projects, and field trips! All of our programs are challenging and enjoyable, and ultimately strengthen each student's power to express ideas effectively, creatively, confidently, and in their individual voice. We have two brick and mortars in Mar Vista and Echo Park, as well as three Writers Rooms at Roosevelt High School, at Manual Arts High School, and at Venice High School.

Description

We have a high need for volunteers to support our day time Field Trips and In-Schools programs. You can help facilitate brainstorming sessions and share-outs, type up student ideas, and support the editing process. You'll also have the opportunity to work one-on-one or with a small group of students, on various writing projects ranging from personal statement essays, Catcher in the Rye essays, poetry, creative writing, and everything in between.
