Volunteer Job Description: AM Dog Indoor Kennels & Outdoor Runs

Summary and Organizational Impact: This volunteer is responsible and receives credit for helping the Norfolk Animal Care Center dogs get their day started on a positive note by providing them with a tidy kennel. Duties include assisting staff with cleaning the indoor dog kennels and cleaning the outdoor dog kennels. Does not handle animals unless 18+ years old. This position is ideal for someone who enjoys a morning workout in the great outdoors!

Reports to: Animal Care Staff, Kennel Supervisors, and Volunteer & Outreach Coordinator

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assisting staff with cleaning the indoor dog kennels
  • Cleaning outdoor dog kennels


  • 16-17 years old with a parent/ legal guardian volunteering alongside.
  • 18 years + can volunteer independently.
  • Must be willing to assist with both indoor and outdoor chores, regardless of weather or temperature
  • Able to accept constructive criticism and can be trusted to apply corrective measures when suggested by staff

Training and Supervision:

  • Attendance to Volunteer Orientation
  • Complete Training Checklist with a designated trainer
  • Supervision is conducted by a Volunteer Lead, Animal Care Staff, Kennel Supervisors, and the Volunteer Coordinator.

Time Commitment:

  • Prefer a weekly commitment.
  • Those who are unable to commit to a weekly shift will be able to pick up vacant shifts as they become available.

The Norfolk Animal Care Center is the municipal animal shelter for the city of Norfolk, Virginia. We accept stray and owner-relinquished animals, as well as animals that have been resuced by Animal Control due to neglect and/or abuse.
