The Phoenix’s mission is to build a sober active community that fuels resilience and harnesses the transformational power of connection so that together we rise, recover, and live.
Since 2006, the Phoenix has helped more than 77,000 people across America rise above addiction and harness the power of self-transformation. It was founded by Scott Strode and a core group of team members to be a safe, sober active community of peers who support each other every day on the journey to recovery. Scott found hope in his own recovery while discovering how ice climbing helped all his problems, fears, and shame of addiction melt away.
The Phoenix takes a new approach to recovery by fostering healing through fitness and personal connection. We offer activities for everyone - from weightlifting and boxing to running, hiking, and yoga. All to help people grow stronger together, overcome the stigma of addiction, and rise to their full potential.
With over 20 million Americans living with substance use disorder, we’re on a mission to help as many people as we can. THE PHOENIX is building a vibrant community of people in recovery with support, hope, and resilience. As a Phoenix volunteer, you can be an invaluable part of making that happen!

Mission Statement
The Phoenix offers a free sober active community to individuals who have suffered from a substance use disorder and to those who choose a sober life. Using a peer support model, we help members heal and rebuild their lives while also striving to eliminate stigma around recovery.
Description
The ultimate impact Phoenix seeks is to help individuals not only achieve sobriety, but to thrive in recovery. The Phoenix Model is unique because of its non-clinical approach that uses the power of human connection and positive coping mechanisms through physical activity to help people heal from the underlying causes of addiction.
Phoenix peer instructors use an experiential approach that leverages innate goal-setting association with engagement in physical activities while facilitating a positive and supportive experience, allowing team members to shed the defense mechanisms that have historically kept them isolated. By bringing people together, Phoenix creates a community where people can heal, obtain essential life skills, and practice effective social interaction. Research suggests facilitating physical activity, social connection and community are potent strategies for promoting health and healing from disease.
