WHY: MLK Day of Service is a defining moment each year when Americans across the country step up to make our communities more equitable and take action. Dr. King believed that "injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere" as he fought for systemic change. His example is our call to action.
The past two years have exacerbated existing educational inequities, with many students suffering from significant learning loss. Only 50% of students test proficiently in English and 40% test proficiently in math. Students who fall behind often never catch up. The path to improving these numbers is through mentoring, confidence-building, and extra instruction, which is where you come in!
VOLUNTEER ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES: Volunteers will learn about education equity, learning loss, the achievement gap, and how this is impacting LAUSD students. Volunteers will also hear how Step Up Tutoring has already impacted thousands of lives by democratizing access to online tutoring and mentoring for students in grades 3-6.
Armed with knowledge of the issue and a script to guide them, volunteers will conduct outreach via phone, email, and social media to recruit volunteer tutors for Step Up Tutoring during this session. Volunteers will be given all the tools to outreach to their own networks as well as to contacts within the L.A. Works community.

MLK DAY OF SERVICE: This is a part of L.A. Works' MLK Jr. Day of Service 2022 event to honor Dr. King's life and legacy through service. The day-long event builds upon the anti-racism movement through an interactive March on Washington in Minecraft and virtual projects focused on tutoring, career readiness, and teacher appreciation.
