Virtual Sports with Special Needs Youth

Save to Favorites

Quick Overview: Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, KEEN LA has shifted our service delivery model to online virtual sessions via ZOOM. Volunteers will be paired with an athlete in a virtual zoom room and participate in predetermined activities. Volunteers will need to log in for a one hour online orientation before beginning the one hour KEEN Virtual session with the athletes.

About KEEN LA: Imagine a World where ALL youth have equal opportunities for recreation, fitness, and friendship--regardless of their abilities.

KEEN's Mission - Empower youth with disabilities by providing free, non-competitive one-to-one programs of exercise, fitness and fun, led by volunteer coaches.

KEEN's Vision - Foster confidence, self-esteem and community inclusion for youth with disabilities; strengthen communities through education of volunteers; and provide families with respite and a supportive network.

Impact: During this time, our community of athletes have no access to their support networks. Parent's are forced to do more with less. Your participation will provide some parents with some much needed respite, even for 10 minutes and you will help us foster a sense of continued community support.

Volunteer Roles and Responsibilities: You must attend a one hour Orientation before the session with athletes where you will be trained and guided on how to support your assigned athlete. During the program session you will participate in a group session led by KEEN LA coach committee members. You will then be paired with an athlete in a zoom break out room or in a group with another volunteer and athletes. In the break out session you will lead the athletes to practice Tennis drills orKEEN Exercise Bingo or you may just chat with the athlete for 15 minutes. At the end of the session a coach committee member will lead Proud Circle where athletes get to share what they're proud of accomplishing, for the non verbal and limited verbal athletes the volunteer coach will share.

Requirements: A background check and signature of waivers is required . Sessions will be recorded and sections may be shared on social media.
