With training, you would lead tours through the historic Roundhouse and Railyard of what was once the Sierra Railway, a steam railroad opened in 1897 to operate as a short line between the resources of Jamestown and Tuolumne County to connect to the transcontinental railroad 42 miles away in Oakdale, CA. We are one of only two remaining complete steam-era railyards left in North America.

About Railtown 1897 State Historic Park
Location:

Mission Statement
The purpose of Railtown 1897 State Historic Park, in Tuolumne County, is to preserve and protect intact, an integrated complex of authentic structures and examples of the type of historic rolling stock and other railroad equipment once used by a typical short-line railroad of the late nineteenth century. The park provides the public with direct experiences of this aspect of the history of California transportation by observing historic railroading skills and operations, and by undertaking extensive steam train excursions through the Sierra Nevada foothill landscape.
Description
Our park represent a unique opportunity for volunteers---where else can you be trained to operate a functioning historic steam excursion railway? We have many entry-level positions that, with the training we provide, you can work your way into becoming an engineer, conductor, or even restoration and maintenance specialist.
To run a railroad, however, there are many people needed in many different positions, some of which focus on good customer service. These positions include: Greeters, Car Hosts, Tour Guides, Deck Interpreters, Ticket Agents, Stationmasters, and hospitality service.
Train crews generally start off working on fire patrol, but with further training, can work as an engineer, brakeman, fireman, or even restoration specialists. If you like beautiful old trains, we will have a spot where you can help. Please help us keep this magical history of steam alive for future generations.
