This year, CBMM is offering a volunteer opportunity to help make our services more accessible to people of all backgrounds and abilities. CBMM digital guests and online users who have low vision and visual impairments are not always able to fully access our content. By creating alternate image descriptions and coding them into our digital images, content can be described to someone by another person or by assistive technology like screen readers. People with different abilities or even unreliable internet connections may choose not to load images from websites, and instead alternate text for each can be shown. Providing another way for digital guests and users to view our content allows CBMM to share what we do more broadly and with more people.

Our 2022 project: Create alternate text descriptions of images published on CBMM’s website and digital photo albums

Tasks to choose from include:

  1. Decorative and photo album pictures: Create one brief description (1-5 words) and one medium-length description (125 characters or less) for each image within a set published on the CBMM website or in the various digital photo albums on the CBMM Flickr account
  2. Complex images such as graphs: Create one long description (250 characters or less) for each image within a set of complex images published on the CBMM website or in the various digital photo albums on the CBMM Flickr account
  3. Creating the tech language: Copy and paste alternate descriptions into template language that can be added to digital image’s HTML markup language throughout CBMM’s platforms
  4. Broaden our audience further: Translate descriptions into another language

Mission Statement

The Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum is dedicated to preserving and exploring the history, environment, and culture of the entire Chesapeake Bay region, and making this resource available to all.

Description

Serving more than 75,000 guests each year, every aspect of fulfilling our mission is driven by CBMM’s values of relevancy, authenticity, and stewardship, along with a commitment to providing engaging guest experiences and transformative educational programming, all while serving as a vital community partner. CBMM’s campus includes a floating fleet of historic boats, 12 exhibition buildings, and changing special exhibitions, all set in a park-like waterfront setting along the Miles River and St. Michaels harbor. CBMM’s collection of historic Chesapeake Bay watercraft-maintained by shipwrights and their apprentices in our working Shipyard-is the largest in existence. The small boat collection includes crabbing skiffs, workboats, and log canoes.

CBMM is a fully accredited member of the American Alliance of Museums, offering interactive exhibitions, tours and scenic boat rides, demonstrations, boat rides on the Miles River, hands-on education programs for children and adults, and annual festivals that celebrate the Chesapeake Bay culture, boats, seafood, history, and people.

CBMM’s Volunteer Program engages community members to participate in our mission to make the Chesapeake Bay available and accessible to people of all backgrounds and abilities. CBMM fosters a collaborative environment where volunteers are empowered to participate and grow, and is committed to making volunteering and community participation accessible to people of all backgrounds and experiences..
