About Tierra Madre: Tierra Madre Horse & Human Sanctuary is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization in Cave Creek, Arizona that provides a forever home to (at present) 27 previously abused, neglected, injured, abandoned, or surrendered horses. For nearly two decades we have been saving horses from the slaughter pipeline and providing to them healing, hope and happiness. They only have one job: to live the best lives they could have ever imagined. We are the only nonprofit, exclusive horse sanctuary in Maricopa County, and the vast majority of our horses are retired.

About the Volunteer Opportunity: Tierra Madre welcomes ALL levels of horse experience! Whether you are an experienced show rider or someone who has never been around a horse, we welcome you. Tierra Madre had a unique horsemanship philosophy we teach to all individuals who come through our gates, and it can be summed up with a single quote: "And he said unto the horse, 'Trust no man in whose eyes you do not see yourself reflected as an equal.'" -- Anonymous

Tierra Madre is currently in need of volunteers during our operating hours (7am-11am, 365 days a year). Responsibilities of volunteers are as follows:

Responsibilities:
- muck stalls
- empty, scrub, and refill water tubs
- turn horses out into our arena
- load feed carts
- make and deliver mashes
- feed lunch
- wash feeders
- groom and clean feet
- eat donuts
- other responsibilities as needed

Qualifications:
- commit to an entire morning shift of 7am-11am
- extremely detail oriented
- horse experience preferred but NOT required
- friendly and value being part of a team
- all ages are welcome; volunteers 12 and under MUST have a parent or guardian with them at all times; ages 13-17 must have written permission from a parent or guardian to volunteer

Interested? Want to learn more? Respond to this opportunity we will direct you to our application page on our website. (Or, go directly to that page HERE: https://tierramadrehorseandhumansanctuary.org/volunteer/). Our next volunteer orientation is Sunday, January 9 from 8:30am - 10am. You must submit an application prior to orientation.

At this time Tierra Madre is most in need of volunteers with lots of horse experience to help walk some of our more advanced horses. IF you have advanced horse experience we will allow an immediate start date (all volunteers must fill out an application prior to starting and go through a safety brief on their first day).

What's in it for you?

1. You will learn all about horses: how to care for them, how their minds work as prey animals, how to communicate, what they eat, what kind of medical challenges can arise and how to treat them, how to groom/clean feet, you name it! This is a great opportunity for individuals looking to adopt a horse but want to gain more experience in how to care for them first.

2. You will be part of an amazing team. Our volunteer team is a hardworking group that fiercely loves horses. There is a great deal of camaraderie amongst our team and we welcome you with open arms.

3. You will get one-on-one time with horses. At Tierra Madre we encourage people to spend time with the horses. Get close to them in their stalls, tell them your secrets, and soak in their healing energy. We are also called a human sanctuary for a reason.

4. You'll be making a huge difference. Tierra Madre is the only exclusive retirement facility for horses in Maricopa County and fulfills a huge need in the community. Join our organization today and be a part of our mission to provide healing, hope and happiness to incredible horses who deserve a safe forever home.
