Recruiting Organization: Washington Urban Debate League

About US:

The Washington Urban Debate League (WUDL) is a local non-profit that supports debate programs at public schools in D.C. and the surrounding areas. We know from extensive research that debate is one of the best things a student can do with their time, but it isn't often available to students in public schools and under-resourced communities. The WUDL fills the gap, starting new debate programs, writing curriculum, hosting tournaments, sponsoring travel, and removing the barriers to entry for students across the region.

We're looking to expand our team to serve more students and more schools across the metro area, and to have the resources necessary to continue our transformational mission in a sustainable way.

We were the only Urban Debate League to grow during the pandemic, and have ambitious plans to continue our momentum this coming year. We've been named "One Of The Best" local non-profits by the D.C. Catalog of Philanthropy, and the National Association of Urban Debate Leagues named us the Urban Debate League of the Year (reigning) and one of our students Urban Debater of the Year (2019). We've also won Middle School Nationals three years in a row.

Volunteer Coaches:

We are ramping up for the school year, and are recruiting debate coaches to assist a wide array of programs across the region. We have a range of programs that could use your help, especially some new programs at the Middle and/or High School level. Our model is a partnership between a teacher-coach and an external volunteer with some debate background (flexible), pairing complementary backgrounds and skill-sets and allowing for differentiated instruction.

Our staff will work with you to find the right fit for you, including geography, timing, etc.

Candidates would:

-Have some background in debate of some kind (doesn't have to be recent!),

-Be able to participate in practices, potentially during the work day (though flexible, 3-5 PM window is a estimate).

FAQ: We will follow our school-partners' lead in terms of in-person versus online. This will be a weird year where we have a lot of different models happening at different schools.

-Be able to pass a background check at your assigned school.
