SITE: The Winooski Community Services Department fosters relationships across generations & cultures by providing safe, healthy environments & opportunities for residents to connect and engage. We promote lifelong wellness & offer high-quality, affordable programs & events that respond to community needs. We manage the O’Brien Community Center, Myers Memorial Pool, and many enriching year-round youth programs. The challenges of generational poverty & English language proficiency facing many of our families make the need for accessible, low-cost, high-quality programming compelling. A designated Refugee Resettlement community, Winooski is home to a diverse population (31 native languages spoken in schools, & 38% of students considered "English Language Learners). Many families depend on City programs & services to help them connect to the community, transcend poverty, and for New Americans, acculturate & settle into a new community. We seek an AmeriCorps member who is flexible, driven, optimistic, with excellent communication skills, and who is excited to provide high-quality recreational programs, engage with the community, & promote creative capacity building.
COVID-19: At the start of the pandemic, New American youth were separated from classmates into solely ELL school pods. This affected their ability to create new friendships, feel a sense of place, & adjust to their new home. As restrictions lift, recreational programming reconnects youth in a safe & meaningful way. The VYDC member is key to expanding & enhancing recreation programs. Location: Winooski, VT
Member Duties: The VYDC-Winooski-Recreation Operations AmeriCorps Member runs a new slate of recreation programs. The member plans, sets up, implements, & follows up, as well as collaborates with youth & staff to provide emotional support & ensure a high-quality program.
