Partners in Learning is an after-school, one-to-one tutor/mentoring program. Over the course of the school year, pairs of youth in grades 1 through 12 and adult volunteer tutor/mentors meet for weekly 90-minute sessions. Deep relationships are formed, and many pairs remain together year after year. Great care is taken in creating these partnerships to match the personalities and interests of the youth and the tutor/mentor.

Partners in Learning is led by Brooke Turner, the Director of Partners in Learning; Devon Lovell, Family Matters’ Curriculum Director; and Carolina Patina Caban, the Partners in Learning Coordinator. Individualized lesson plans developed for each youth factor in age, academic levels, and personal interests and goals. In addition to the one-to-one work, pairs come together for monthly science experiments or art projects, twice yearly sharing circles, and (new this year) two "first-time-experience" field trips.

Expectations of tutor/mentors

  • Commit to a full academic year of weekly tutoring (90-minute sessions), September-June.
  • Attend two tutor/mentor support workshops annually. Topics may include:
  • CPS 101: Understanding Chicago Public Schools
  • Navigating College Applications: FAFSA, Scholarships, and the Common Application
  • Microaggressions and Cultural Competency
  • Healing-Centered Learning: Support for Youth Surviving Trauma and Sensory Disorders
  • Complete the Family Matters Principles of Leadership training by your second tutor/mentoring year. (PoL training is a 16-hour curriculum covering our signature communication and leadership tenets.)
  • Collaborate with PL staff to complete program and participant evaluations three times per year.
