Recruiting Organization: Chicago Mobile Makers
Chicago Mobile Makers is looking for new board members! This organization meets underserved
youth where they are, whether in school or their community, and brings them
skill-building design workshops they likely wouldn’t otherwise have access to.
CMM works with schools and communities primarily in the South and West sides of
Chicago, aiming to inspire the next generation of designers and architects to
diversify the field so that communities are built by and for all.
We are looking for new board members to fill the role of Vice President of
Operations, Secretary, Treasurer, and VP of Fundraising. For VPs of Operations
and Fundraising, we’re looking for people with several years of experience in
management/HR and fundraising/development with wide and deep networks to tap
into for advice and resources. All board members should be tech-savvy and
competent with virtual collaboration tools (email, Google Docs, video
conferencing, Trello, etc). This will be a working board and the anticipated
time commitment is 5-10 hours per month, depending on the season and events.
New board members will serve a one-year term and sign a board member contract that
outlines their responsibilities to CMM and CMM’s responsibilities towards them.
Board member orientation will take place in November and at that time, board
member duties and the meeting schedule will be finalized, based on board member
input. Board members need to reflect the ideals of the organization and the
communities it serves, so we’re looking for BIPOC professionals passionate and
skilled around youth, design, fundraising, and organizational development.
CMM is a dynamic organization with tremendous potential. The new board is a great
opportunity to collaborate with other dynamic professionals to push the
organization forward. Join us!
Chicago Mobile Makers creates programming that encourages Chicago youth to become
advocates and change-makers in their own communities through design-focused
skill-building workshops. Our objectives are threefold: 1. Engage and empower
youth through making and skill-building 2. Train and support future public
interest architects, designers, and makers 3. Advocate for social, economic,
gender, and racial diversity in the architecture and broader design fields.
Founded
in 2017, Chicago Mobile Makers is an arts and culture nonprofit that offers
design and problem-solving workshops to youth in Chicago, focusing on BIPOC
students in the South and West Sides, to encourage underrepresented youth to
become advocates and change-makers in their own communities. CMM’s mission is
to engage and empower youth through the power of creation and skill-building,
to train and support future public interest architects, designers, and makers,
and to advocate for equity and social, economic, gender, and racial diversity
in the architecture and broader design fields. CMM makes design and STEAM
education accessible to children in Chicago’s most disinvested neighborhoods.
In 2019, CMM engaged with more than 670 youth by hosting 150 design workshops
in 11 different neighborhoods, including Englewood, Little Village, East
Garfield Park, and Albany Park. In 2020, CMM unveiled the Mobile Makerspace:
what was formerly a USPS delivery truck is now a solar-powered mobile classroom
containing power tools, building materials, and digital fabrication tools.
Staff take this truck to community events and conduct pop-up events in
different locations. In 2021, CMM will open a permanent makerspace in Humboldt
Park in the Kimball Arts Center that will host classes and workshops in
addition to the mobile workshops.
