ORGANIZATION: Idealist.org

Recruiting Organization: Brilliant Detroit

Brilliant Detroit is excited to announce a partnership with AARP Foundation Experience Corps, an evidence based program that connects growing young readers with caring adult volunteers who tutor them in literacy. As the host of the Experience Corps program, Brilliant Detroit is seeking volunteers from the community to become literacy tutors and mentors to our students.

Locations in the Community:

The program will kick off in January 2022 and serve students at 3 Brilliant Detroit locations:

  1. Littlefield
  2. Brightmoor
  3. Chandler Park

Due to the pandemic, our current plans are to provide tutoring virtually to students through ZOOM. However, we are optimistic that we will be able to tutor in-person in the near future.

Comprehensive Training:

All Experience Corps tutors will receive comprehensive training throughout their course of service, as well as materials to support the Experience Corps structured tutoring model. Tutors will attend an in-depth Pre-Service Training to ensure they are prepared to provide high quality literacy tutoring to our students. Training will also include support around virtual tutoring and technical assistance for using ZOOM.

The Students:

All of the students who become a part of the Experience Corps program are a part of the Brilliant Detroit community and attend our after-school programs. We will be working with students who are in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grade.

The Impact:

As a tutor you will make a long lasting impact on our students. Students who can read fluently at grade level will have the opportunity to succeed in school and later in life. Moreover, those students will show significant improvements in their social-emotional well-being.

There are positive impacts for you, as well! As a volunteer tutor, you will be serving with a team of peers from the community, expanding your social network, and feeling more connected. Most importantly, you will be able to share your experiences, knowledge, and wisdom with the leaders of tomorrow, the children you tutor.

Join Our Family:

If you are interested in taking the first step of getting involved with this exciting volunteer opportunity, we invite you to attend one of our virtual informational sessions.

Informational sessions will be hosted on the following dates and times:

  • October 19, 2021 12 - 1 p.m.
  • October 21, 2021 6 - 7 p.m.

The Zoom access information for all of the informational sessions is as follows:
