Recruiting Organization: Alliance for Multicultural Community Services

About 1 in 5 Houston adults is considered illiterate, experiencing difficulty in completing tasks such as filling out job applications. The goal of the Houston Adult Literacy Project is to build the capacity of adult education and literacy organizations in Houston, which support low-income, low literacy adult learners to help them to obtain and grow the skills they need to become self-sufficient and improve their qualities of life. At WHAM, our entire team genuinely cares about each other, and we work well together. You build relationships with each other as well as with clients and volunteers. If you have the heart to help others, then the heart-warming work you will do at WHAM will have you looking forward to each new workday, eager to make more of a difference. You will get to see the children, seniors, homeless individuals, and families in need that your work is benefiting and helping out of crisis. Best of all is that working at WHAM you get to wear many hats and that allows you to widen your skillset, all while making a tremendous difference and helping create a lasting impact on our community.

Member Duties: As a Community Engagement VISTA, you will receive professional development training, tools, and an education award! The Community Engagement VISTA will play a vital role in developing and implementing an engagement plan that will build West Houston Assistance Ministries' capacity to serve the low-income-low literacy adult population. The VISTA will increase community engagement through strengthening communications strategies, defining audiences and constituencies to deliver impactful and engaging messages, participating in community events and meetings, and staying abreast of advocacy initiatives both on national and local levels.
