Recruiting Organization: Goodwill Northern New England AmeriCorps Programs
Rochester is small city located in the Seacoast area of NH. The mission of the Rochester School Department is to "ensure quality educational experiences" for its 4,000 students. Our goals are to have all of our children at "grade level" in both reading and mathematics. The district is a NH leader in the implementation of Response to Instruction (RtI) strategies, technology in education and competency-based learning. AmeriCorps service site will be at Rochester Middle School, a Title 1 school that enrolls a high percentages of students coming from under-resourced families. Poverty at these schools is extreme, with greater than 48% of our population eligible for free or reduced lunch. Academic supports and extended school programing are critical to the success and well-being of many of these children. Check out our website at http://rochesterschools.com/rms/index.html as well as our Twitter feed @RMS_NH for more information.
Goodwill NNE’s Granite State Service Corps places AmeriCorps members in New Hampshire schools and nonprofits to serve in and out of school in order to support students (grades 4-12) that have been impacted by Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACES), including child abuse/neglect. Many of these youth suffer from trauma due to instability in the home which makes it challenging to succeed in school (both socially and academically). Members take a "whole child" approach, implementing Social Emotional Learning (SEL) practices, mentoring youth, engaging families, and supporting youth through in-school and in after-school programming that increases resilience, develops human capital, and ultimately increases self-sufficiency of the youth.
At Rochester Middle, members will act as a lead academic support provider for a portfolio of at-risk middle schoolers to support them in reading, math, and recreational activities. Members will use social development strategies to promote care for others, high self-esteem, and positive peer relations.
