Volunteer Outreach for Community Action in Literacy -VOCAL* AmeriCorps
LVI is seeking individuals to become Literacy Specialists in its VOCAL*AmeriCorps. LVI provides increased economic and educational opportunities to two under-served populations - low literate economically disadvantaged adults residing in various communities in the greater Chicago area and teens incarcerated in the Illinois Youth Centers. As Literacy Specialists, members serve as one-to-one and small group tutors providing basic literacy and ESL instruction and GED preparation, recruit volunteers to serve as tutors, provide job readiness assistance and serve as job search coaches. Members are also involved with community outreach, program planning, and social and volunteer engagement activities.
Though AmeriCorps is not an employment program, individuals serving in it receive a bi-weekly living allowance during their one-year term of service. The program offers two service options: Full-time, 1.700 hours and Part-time, 900 hours:
Full-time members generally serve 35 hours a week for a one-year period and receive a bi-weekly living allowance ($15,100 per annum), health insurance, and worker’s comp coverage from LVI. Income-based child care assistance is available through the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS). Full-time members also receive at the end of their service an educational award and student loan deferment during service.
Part-time members generally serve 20 hours a week for one-year and receive a bi-weekly living allowance based on $6,900 per annum and worker’s comp coverage. Part-time members receive at the end of their service an educational award of $2,960 and student loan deferral during service.
Members of the VOCAL AmeriCorps program are also offered a variety of training opportunities to prepare them for later careers, especially in the field of education. Check out the "Members" section of our website for past training offered.
