CALL FOR LEADERS: ARIZONA STATE DEATH PENALTY ABOLITION COORDINATOR

Save to Favorites

ORGANIZATION: Idealist.org

Recruiting Organization: Amnesty International USA - Grassroots Leadership & Engagement

Amnesty International opposes the death penalty unconditionally because it violates the right to life and to be free from cruel, inhumane, and degrading punishment. We believe that it imitates and compounds the crime it condemns. Too often in the US some are denied our right to equal protection under the law. People of color and those living in poverty are overrepresented in our criminal justice system, including in the application of the death penalty.

Amnesty’s State Death Penalty Abolition Coordinators(SDPACs) are volunteer leaders who serve as local coordinators for abolition advocacy in their state. SDPACs collaborate with Amnesty staff, members, and criminal justice coalition partners to educate others about the death penalty, advocate and campaign locally and at the state level, and lead action to stop executions.

This volunteer position is an exciting opportunity to contribute your passion for death penalty abolition while leveraging and expanding your activism skills. You’ll get trained and supported by AIUSA and be part of a community of activists advancing human rights and social justice.

As Arizona SDPAC, you’ll work with partners to:

  • Inform Amnesty members and staff of death penalty news in Arizona, i.e. upcoming executions and relevant legislation
  • Coordinate on statewide strategies and help inform Amnesty’s national strategy
  • Mobilize activists to engage in grassroots legislative advocacy and case campaigning
  • Design and present death penalty education events for our members and your community
  • Serve as Amnesty’s local representative in Arizona anti-death penalty coalitions
  • Build relationships with local coalition leadership and members related to racial and criminal justice, Amnesty membership

You're the ideal SDPAC candidate if you have these qualifications:

  • Arizona resident willing to commit to the role for a minimum of two years
  • Thoughtful, committed team player passionate about death penalty abolition and eradicating discrimination from our justice system
  • Experience with death penalty activism or organizing, and working with volunteers
  • Willing to take initiative and develop creative solutions to challenges and work in coordination with others
  • Willing to travel as needed and attend Amnesty trainings (travel expenses covered)
