Recruiting Organization: Amedisys Hospice - Masontown, Pa.
Attention college students! We are offering remote and potential in-person volunteer activities. Due to Medicare requirements under the federal mandate all volunteers are required to be vaccinated for Covid-19.
We know that many programs require volunteer hours in order to graduate. Why not do something that fulfills that requirement while providing support to hospice patients and their caregivers? Before you decide let’s first dispel some hospice myths.
· Myth #1: Hospice is a place.
Hospice care takes place wherever the need exists -- usually the patient’s home. About 70 percent of hospice care takes place where the patient lives.
· Myth # 2: Hospice is only for people with cancer.
More than one-half of hospice patients nation-wide have diagnoses other than cancer.
· Myth #3: Hospice is only for old people.
Although a majority of hospice patients are older, hospices serve patients of all ages.
· Myth #4: Hospice is only for dying people.
As a family-centered concept of care, hospice focuses as much on the grieving family as on the dying patient.
· Myth #5: Hospice can only help when family members are available to provide care.
We recognize that a terminally ill person may live alone, or with family members who are unable to provide the care needed. Hospice helps find an alternative location where safe care will be provided.
· Myth # 10: Hospice is for when there is no hope.
When one is faced with their imminent death there are two choices: concede and wait for it to happen or live the remainder of life as fully as possible. Hospice works towards the goals of providing pain management, emotional support, and spiritual support. Through the work of the
Hospice team (including our volunteers) family members can look upon this time with the knowledge that they did all that they could to ensure a peaceful passing for their loved ones.
This is an unusual time for hospice volunteers in that in-person activities have been very limited. What once was an opportunity to spend time with patients reading to them, sharing music, playing cards, and doing a craft project has been adapted to provide safe support during a pandemic.
Currently, volunteers make once per week phone calls supporting patients and their caregivers. For someone who finds themselves homebound a friendly voice calling to check in on them or talk about their favorite things can make a world of difference.
Volunteers do not make cold calls and training is provided.
As a volunteer you would be a crucial part of our hospice team! If you think you might be a good fit
