Board Chair Job Description

Position Summary:

Family Equality is seeking a volunteer board chair who will oversee board affairs, ensuring the integrity of the board’s process in governing and supporting the organization. The chair acts as the representative of the board as a whole. The Board Chair will support and sustain the work of Family Equality and provide governance leadership and strategic fundraising support.

Specific responsibilities include

Leadership, governance, and oversight

• Being a trusted advisor to the CEO as s/he/they develops and implements Family Equality’s strategic plan.
• Developing and managing relationships and communicating with: funders, partners, and other stakeholders.
• As a board member, approving Family Equality’s annual budget, audit reports, and material business decisions; being informed of, and meeting all, legal and fiduciary responsibilities.
• Coordinating an annual performance evaluation of the CEO.
• Assisting the CEO and Nominating Committee in recruiting board members.
• Periodically consulting with board members on their roles and helping them assess their performance.
• Planning, presiding over, and facilitating board and committee meetings; partnering with the CEO to ensure that board resolutions are carried out.
• Acting as an ambassador for the organization.
• Ensuring Family Equality’s commitment to a diverse board and staff that reflects the communities it serves.

Fundraising

• In collaboration with the CEO and Development team, generating substantial annual revenue and fostering Family Equality’s overall financial health.
• Personally treating Family Equality’s as a top philanthropic priority reflected in an annual financial gift.
• Ensuring that 100 percent of Family Equality board members make an annual contribution that is commensurate with their capacity.
• Identifying, qualifying, cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding major individual donors, corporate, and/or foundation gifts.

Board terms

• Family Equality’s Board Chair will serve a two-year term.

Qualifications

This is an extraordinary opportunity for an individual who is passionate about LGBTQ+ family rights, and who has a track record of board leadership. The selected Board Chair will have achieved leadership stature in business, government, philanthropy, or the nonprofit sector. Their accomplishments will allow them to attract other well-qualified, high-performing board members.

Ideal candidates will have the following qualifications:

• Experience incorporating DEI+B lens consistent with organizational strategy.
• Extensive professional experience with significant executive leadership accomplishments in business, government, philanthropy, or the nonprofit sector.
• Demonstrated success as a nonprofit board member or board chair.
• Track record of building credibility in the funding community that has resulted in major gifts to a nonprofit.
• A commitment to and understanding of Family Equality’s constituents and mission preferably based on experience.
• Savvy diplomatic skills and a natural affinity for cultivating relationships and persuading, convening, facilitating, and building consensus among diverse individuals.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills coupled with natural affinity for public speaking.
• Personal qualities of integrity, credibility, and a passion for improving the lives of LGBTQ+ families.

• Ability to establish a trusted advisor relationship with the CEO and other board members.

• Excellent facilitation skills: ability to influence and foster decision-making.
• Ability to act impartially and without bias.
• Tact and diplomacy.
• Ability to communicate effectively.
• Political acuity.
• Governance and board-level experience in the non-profit industry.

Selection Process:

The Governance Committee will conduct the board chair selection process and recommend to the board, for its approval, a nominee for the incoming chair. Candidates will be sourced via a call for nominations, self-interest, and partnerships with board recruitment and matching firms.

1. Interested candidates should submit a letter of interest and resume.
2. The chair of the Governance Committee and CEO will meet with finalists to ascertain interests, strengths, and weaknesses.
3. The Governance or Nominating Committee will discuss findings and ultimately agree on a nominee to recommend to the board
