Sowing Empowerment & Economic Development, Inc. (SEED) provides food, clothing, education and training while promoting self-sufficiency and empowerment directly to low- to moderate-income families and communities. Through academic achievement, housing & economic development and community services, SEED will create environments where all individuals are empowered, all children are nurtured, families are strengthened, and communities are transformed.

SEED serves nearly 10,000 Prince George’s County residents annually as a HUD approved housing counseling agency, through the operation of a K-8 public charter school, extended day enrichment program, child development center as well as an emergency food distribution center and clothes closet. SEED also conducts regular outreach initiatives and workshops.

EXCEL Academy Public Charter School is a public, International Baccalaureate candidate charter school in Prince George's County. We cultivate our scholars' growth using the four pillars of character development, college and career readiness, cultural arts, and community engagement. Serving approximately 412 students, EXCEL Academy strives to cultivate every student’s academic and social learning potential through a rigorous academic program, innovating instructional techniques, and partnerships with school and community stakeholder groups; provides a literacy and culturally rich environment; maintains small class sizes at all grade levels’ employs highly qualified and motivated teachers; and institutes student support systems comprised of staff and parents/guardians working cooperatively to create a safe and orderly environment.

The central role of a tutor is to deliver lessons and instruction to support students so that they understand concepts taught during the normal school day. Tutoring will be offered individually and in small group settings. Tutors should be familiar with the culture and dynamics of the community, committed to the goals of SEED, EXCEL Academy Public Charter School and Prince George’s County Public Schools.


  • Minimally, assist with homework/independent study. Ideally, create engaging learning experiences to address students’ academic needs.
  • Contributes to student learning, growth, and advancement.
  • Demonstrates academic competence in subject area(s).
  • Maintains a growth mindset toward student learning and teaching practice.
  • Facilitates problem-solving with a curious mind and critical thinking skills.
  • Serves as a role-model for students.
  • Collaborates effectively with parents, EXCEL Academy leadership and staff, and SEED to increase student performance.
  • Invests in the learners’ well-being, health, and safety, physically, socially, and emotionally.
  • Recognizes the relationship between social-emotional learning and academic performance and shows an ability to teach the "whole child."


  • Emotional maturity and stability
  • Patient, flexible, positive, consistent, dependable, and cooperative with a sense of humor
  • Ability to be a reflective practitioner and willing to build on observational feedback
  • Ability to positively supervise students
  • Ability to design and facilitate differentiated and personalized learning goals and activities that follow a coherent sequence, are aligned to instructional goals, and engage students in high-level cognitive activity preferred, but not required


  • High school diploma, GED, or equivalent required
  • Bachelor’s degree in Education or subject-matter field preferred
  • Recent teaching experience a plus
