Preparation, Prevention, and Presence

Be ready to help your community when the next wildfire strikes!

We are inviting all compassionate people, community minded leaders, humanitarian agencies, and cause-driven organizations to a Wildfire Shelter Virtual Training Fair! Participants will learn how to be a Red Cross Shelter Volunteer so they can answer the call when our community needs it the most!

Severe weather-related disasters are becoming more frequent and impactful. Wildfires have cleared entire towns, consumed millions of acres and have shown no signs of slowing down as we enter the traditionally busy portion of "wildfire season".

Since fires earnestly began in June of this year and have ramped up throughout the summer, hundreds of trained Red Cross disaster workers have answered the call to open or support shelters and evacuation centers across the West. Yet, soon enough these volunteers need relief and we need more people who are trained and willing to respond to disasters.

So, where can you come in?

While we can’t stop emergencies from happening, we can help ensure that no one ever faces them alone. Consider taking training to be a part of our most critically needed volunteer team:

The Disaster Shelter Team

Many people come to a shelter midst a disaster for necessities. Volunteers are needed to support the day-to-day activities within a shelter. This may include working in reception, registration, feeding, dormitory, information, or other areas within a shelter.

How to start:

Free online training will be provided. If the need arises, volunteers are asked to commit to multiple local shifts of 4, 6, or 12 hours each. For those able to travel outside their local area, a commitment of at least 14 consecutive days, working 8 or 12-hour shifts, is required.

You can complete all your training in a 3-hour shelter orientation and volunteer fair bundle (dates below)! If you want to get to know a little bit more before committing, attend a 30 minute virtual shelter fair to learn more about what a shelter operation looks like and how you can be involved.

Join hands with one of America’s most trusted humanitarian organizations (and the world’s largest volunteer organization) by helping your community.
