ORGANIZATION: Idealist.org

Recruiting Organization: John Wornall House

Role:

Field trips are often the first time a child visits a museum. Wornall/Majors is looking for volunteer docents to make those children’s experiences unforgettable. Volunteers will work in conjunction with staff to tailor each field trip to the teacher's needs. Common duties include giving tours, leading small group activities, and answering questions. No prior knowledge is needed. Wornall/Majors will help guides learn the necessary information as well as train them to work with students. Docents should be comfortable engaging with children of all ages. Help Wornall/Majors make history come alive for Kansas City’s students by serving as a field trip docent.

Organization description:

We are a non-profit that operates two of Kansas City’s most historic structures: the John Wornall House and the Alexander Majors House. These historic homes serve as the dynamic backdrop for events and community gatherings. We strive to tell an inclusive and accessible story about American mid-nineteenth-century history.

Position duties:

· Learn the history of the historic homes to be able to relay it to guests

· Give students tours on a variety of topics including slavery, frontier life, the civil war, and sustainability

· Answer student questions

· Enforce house rules

· Help create a welcoming atmosphere

· Lead small group activities

Time commitment and schedule:

· As needed depending on demand, spring tours more common

· At least two field trips per year

Onboarding process:

After completing a background check, volunteers will attend a one-on-one training session with the volunteer manager. They will learn the history of the houses as well as go over the field trip packages.
