Healthy Aging with Arthritis: An Education Outreach Project

New Horizons for Seniors Program

Approximate commitment timeframe: August 2021 to March 2022

As a presentation facilitator, you will receive training on how to facilitate a virtual Arthritis Society presentation. This is an excellent opportunity for someone who is comfortable with technology, public speaking, and has a familiarity or connection to arthritis. These presentations are pre-developed and pre-recorded by the Arthritis Society, and discuss various aspects of arthritis, management, and living-well strategies. Volunteer opportunities will be available through primarily virtual environments. These presentations will be delivered to various community members, community groups, residences, organizations, and workplaces who wish to increase their knowledge and awareness of arthritis, and how to manage the disease. Participants consist of those living with arthritis, those who support someone living with arthritis, or are general community members looking to learn more. These presentations are an opportunity to share information about arthritis and vital self-management information to help people live well with arthritis. The primary role will be to welcome attendees, facilitate the virtual presentation, present the pre-developed video content, and support a Q&A following the presentation.

Some examples of a presentation facilitator role at the Arthritis Society:

· Hosting a virtual webinar, welcoming participants as they enter the platform, introducing the presentation to the group, and thanking supporters

· Playing the pre-recorded video presentation content provided, managing the technical settings to ensure audio-visual is shared with the attendees

· Facilitating a question-and-answer period following the presentation, answering questions posed by the attendees in a non-judgmental and supportive manner, utilizing tools provided by the Arthritis Society during training, including our Frequently Asked Question tools

· Inviting participants to participate in the evaluation survey following the event

· Develop specialized skills and experience (technology skills, communication, data management, community engagement, etc.)

· Build connections and be part of a community, and receive ongoing opportunity and mentorship

· A letter acknowledging a volunteer’s contribution can be provided on request


Duties and Responsibilities:

· Ability to commit to hosting at least 2 presentations

· Facilitate and deliver presentations using the content materials provided, which includes presenting a video recording of the presentation content

· Answer questions from participants about arthritis while ensuring a safe and welcoming space for productive dialogue

· Champion the importance of participants taking an active role in their arthritis management

· Returning all unused material back to the Arthritis Society upon completion of the presentation

All materials have been produced by the Arthritis Society, and you will receive support from the Mission Team.

Skills and Qualifications:

· An interest in helping individuals living with arthritis

· Knowledge and experience of difficulties faced by people living with arthritis, personal experience is an asset.

· Excellent individual and group communication skills

· Have access to a reliable internet connection and a computer for virtual presentations

· Have access to a webcam and private space to present clear audio/visual (please connect with us if this is a barrier)

· Comfort with technology, experience with webinar platforms such as Zoom is an asset

Availability and Working Environment:

· Approximate timeframe of involvement in the project is August 2021 to March 2022

· Volunteers are asked to commit to assisting with at least two presentations during this timeframe, approximately two-hours per presentation (includes one-hour presentation time, plus preparation time). There may be opportunity to host more than 2 presentations per volunteer, depending on the volunteer’s availability

· This role will require training which will take place online using web conferencing software

· Once trained, volunteers will conduct presentations virtually from the comfort of their home
