ORGANIZATION: Idealist.org

Recruiting Organization: NY de Volunteer Inc.

NY de Volunteer Inc. (NYdV) Board of Directors seeks an Executive Director to lead a grassroots, nonprofit organization that empowers people to have a positive impact on society through community engagement and leadership development.

NYdV is a 501(c)3 registered nonprofit in New York State. As a completely volunteer-led organization, NYdV has developed innovative programs in its nearly 20 years of existence. Its volunteers work together in teams to implement NYdV’s flagship program, Exploring Japanese Culture; plan Spa Day at nursing homes, spearhead the Global Leadership Study Tour program for high school and college students visiting New York, and participate in local Japanese cultural festivals and events.

The new Executive Director will build upon the work of the Interim Executive Director in developing programs for a post-COVID-19 New York. This position is an excellent learning opportunity for someone interested in working with a small board to grow the organization, scale its operational capacities, and expand its reach. The individual will bring a strong desire to serve all New Yorkers through community engagement initiatives, especially those in underserved neighborhoods. The individual will have a strong interest in developing and cultivating leadership among the volunteers. They should also have a strong interest in learning about local issues and seeking ways to address them in creative ways. The board will consider individuals open to experimentation in creating new programs and testing out new management styles.

The position is unpaid, although there is an expense budget for the ED to conduct business on behalf of NYdV. The ED is expected to spend about 10-15 hours a week:

  • organizing regular meetings with volunteer staff,
  • developing volunteer engagement strategies targeting the Japanese business and expatriate communities in NY,
  • engaging with local organizations to collaborate on programs,
  • liaising with the Board in developing fundraising campaigns,
  • collaborating with the board on strengthening NYdV’s ties with volunteer alumni once they return to Japan, and
  • developing new programs that achieve our mission.

Ideal candidates are retired individuals with an extensive corporate background interested in applying their experience and skillsets in a non-profit environment OR a mid-career professional with a strong desire and potential to grow into the position.

Candidates must possess the following qualifications:

  • Bilingual (Fluent in English and proficient in business-level Japanese)
  • Excellent listener and communicator able to empathize with volunteers and program beneficiaries
  • Familiarity with the network of Japanese corporations’ overseas offices located in the NY Metropolitan area.
  • Strong motivation to engage and work with the philanthropic community among Japanese companies based in NYC.
  • Possess management and/or board experience, preferably in a nonprofit or volunteer organization.
  • Experience with budgets and financial management, preferably with using QuickBooks or other accounting software.
  • Strong passion and belief in the power of volunteerism and giving back to the community
