Recruiting Organization: Lori's Hands, Inc.
Lori’s Hands is a community health service learning organization that connects college student volunteers with individuals living in their own homes with chronic illness. In non-COVID times, students make weekly in-home friendly companionship visits, and assist clients with non-medical tasks like grocery shopping, housework, and other instrumental activities of daily living. During the pandemic, students are connecting with their Lori’s Hands clients by phone and video calls, and are assisting with ordering grocery delivery, connecting to other community services, and providing companionship. In all cases, our clients also serve as volunteers -- they commit to sharing about their life and health experiences with our students, to provide a real-world learning opportunity.
Lori’s Hands has been operational in Newark, DE for 10 years and is launching its second chapter in Baltimore, MD this fall. We are actively recruiting student volunteers! Lori’s Hands has an established history of mentoring students for field placements, community clinical rotations, internships, required service hours for medical/PA school applications, and other professional development opportunities. Students receive in-depth training and supervision as part of their placement with Lori’s Hands.
A good fit for Lori’s Hands is a student who:
- Has an interest in working with older adults and people living with chronic illness (many of our students are studying nursing, social work, public health, nutrition, or pre-med majors, but that isn’t a requirement)
- Can commit to visiting (virtually, during the pandemic) one client, once/week for at least the remainder of this academic semester; the expected commitment is at least one hour per week; we can work with students who are seeking additional service hours by developing mutually beneficial projects and fieldwork assignments
- Is attending a university or college located in Baltimore
- Is responsive, caring, professional, and eager to learn
