Recruiting Organization: Jacob A. Riis Neighborhood Settlement

Jacob A. Riis Neighborhood Settlement is looking for volunteers to support ESOL classes for adult immigrants in Queens. Volunteers can help with a variety of tasks depending in your skills and interests, including:

Intake Assistant - Assist new students with completing the registration process. Facilitate a conversational English assessment with each student to determine their proficiency level and class placement. Help guide students through completing the online intake form. Provide basic information about the program. Bilingual volunteers are especially helpful for assisting students with the registration process in Spanish, Arabic, and Bangla. Training will be provided.

Volunteer Tutor - Support students enrolled in English classes through 1:1 tutoring. By providing extra language practice outside of their ESOL classes, you will help students improve their English skills for practical use such as in social, educational, or professional settings. Volunteers will be matched with an individual student based on mutual availability. Tutor resources and study materials will be provided. Bilingual volunteers (Spanish, Portuguese, Arabic, etc.), volunteers with teaching or tutoring experience, and volunteers with TESOL/TEFL certifications are highly preferred!

Due to COVID-19 this is a remote volunteering opportunity. A brief interview and orientation with the Volunteer Coordinator will give more details. If interested, please reach out to Adam Khodz at volunteerriis@gmail.com !
