Recruiting Organization: Alliance for Multicultural Community Services

About 1 in 5 Houston adults is considered illiterate, experiencing difficulty in completing tasks such as filling out job applications. The goal of the Houston Adult Literacy Project is to build the capacity of adult education and literacy organizations in Houston, which support low income, low literacy adult learners to help them to obtain and grow the skills they need to become self-sufficient and improve their qualities of life. Take action against adult illiteracy by becoming a Volunteer Coordinator VISTA, serving with YMCA International Services. The YMCA is a worldwide movement with a presence in over 120 countries. The hallmark of all YMCAs is that each is a grassroots organization focused on addressing local community needs. YMCA International Services is a unique branch of the Y of Greater Houston and seeks to meet the needs of Houston’s significant refugee and immigrant communities. We provide comprehensive programs that focus on building human assets and fostering self-sufficiency. YMCA International Services serves over 11,000 newcomers annually providing comprehensive services in resettlement, employment, case management, cultural orientation, education, immigration, and medical advocacy.

Member Duties: If you are passionate about serving the Houston community, become a Volunteer Coordinator VISTA and play a vital role in building volunteer capacity to serve the low-income-low literacy adult clients by supporting YMCA International’s volunteer program.
