Job Description

NCBA CLUSA is currently seeking 2 (1- remote US volunteer and 1- volunteer based in Peru) qualified Farmer-to-Farmer volunteer candidates for the position of Strategic Planner to support Cacao de Aroma based in Tocache, Peru.

Cacao de Aroma is a second-tier cooperative founded in 2014 sponsored by German cooperation project PRODATU II. Six cooperatives are members of Cacao de Aroma: AsociaciĆ³n de Productores Nueva Vision, Cooperativa Agroindustrial Uchiza CAU Ltda, Cooperativa Agroindustrial Cordillera Azul de Nuevo Progreso Ltda COOPACANP, Cooperativa Agroindustrial ParaĆ­so Ltda. COOPA, Cooperativa Agroindustrial CP Cacao y la Cooperativa Agraria del Valle del Mishollo Ltda. Their combined efforts produced 1,100 tons of cacao beans in 2020.

Cacao de Aroma is an exemplary cooperative in Tocache and other cooperatives look up to them. Most of their success is the result of implementing their plans and reaching objectives. Nevertheless, within the last two years there has not been an increase in their production nor increase in their exports. They believe COVID has changed the cacao market and they need to adjust their plans accordingly. Their strategic plan was drafted in 2018 to be used until 2022 hence they are working with strategies and objectives based on past scenarios. Cacao de Aroma would like a volunteer to contribute to the development of a revised strategic plan, which takes into account COVID-19, for next 4 to 5 years.

Duration: 2 weeks, May- October 2021

ESSENTIAL AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY:

  • Analyze Cacao de Aroma’s internal processes using SWOT matrix and/or other matrices collecting information through surveys and/or focus groups with the board of directors, members, and staff.
  • Provide guidance to draft and select best strategies to reach Cacao de Aroma’s goals considering the organization’s mission and vision statements.
  • Develop a revised strategic plan to adapt to changes, opportunities and challenges of the current environment. This will serve as a living document for Cacao Aroma’s management.
  • Provide guidance and establish agreements to adjust Cacao de Aroma’s general and specific objectives.
  • Provide guidance to establish activities for the short- and mid- term focusing on accomplishing objectives.

Qualifications
  • Experience in developing strategic plans, policy making, market access and exports.
  • Knowledgeable of the cacao market and value chain
  • Group facilitation and adult training.
  • Spanish language skills are preferable.
  • Available for virtual communications with Host Organization, Staff and Co-volunteer
  • US candidate must be legally able to work in the U.S. without sponsorship
  • Advanced English language skills; reading, writing, speaking.
