Maplehill School and Farm is an alternative educational organization that provides direct services to youth whose lives have been impacted by trauma and/or disabilities.

PROGRAM: The fulltime & part-time members of the VT Youth Development Corps AmeriCorps State Program (VYDC) implement diverse youth initiatives, fostering positive development & building resilience to help youth avoid opioid misuse & other unhealthy behaviors, transcend the effects of COVID-19, and the gain academic, social, & job skills needed to thrive. SITE: Maplehill School & Farm is a safe, caring, land-based educational community where relationships inspire learning. Our mission is to provide real-world educational experiences where students gain practical skills and personal successes. By acquiring academic, vocational, and social skills, students are prepared for education, employment, and independent living. Maplehill serves youth 12-22 with a variety of social, learning and emotional disabilities. We provide small group and individualized instruction and engage students in activities such as service learning, project-based learning, vocational training, internships, recreational activities, and farming & gardening. On our 230 acres farm, students engage in growing food which feeds the school & local communities. We employ nurturing restorative practices (self-reflection, clear & empathic communication, personal resilience) and celebrate everyone’s contributions. Our 2 rural campuses provide a safe, caring community for students. The AmeriCorps member expands our Farm-to-School & community outreach activities, collaborates with staff to provide healthy, locally grown food to students and staff year-round, and educates students nutrition, culinary life skills, humane animal care, and food production basics.

COVID-19: AmeriCorps members expand our capacity to offer youth opportunities they may not have had access to during the pandemic. Location: Plainfield, VT

Member Duties: The VYDC-Maplehill Farm to School AmeriCorps Member organizes our healthy meal program, researches & coordinates access to healthy food options, plans weekly food shopping, and engages in daily farm operations throughout the seasonal shifts. The member--(1) provides youth opportunities and support by engaging them in civic engagement discussions & environmental stewardship; (2) plans weekly PE activities and summer programming; (3) leads summer programming & offers tutoring support as need be (4) creates learning opportunities on the farm such as planting, tending, harvesting, and preserving crops, as well as animal chores; (5) coordinates weekly community lunch & serves daily student lunch; and (6) provides internship support as needed.

Minimum Age: 22. Reliable private transportation, clean driving record, & valid license; travel between campuses & to monthly AmeriCorps training in Montpelier. Send resume, cover letter, and contact information for 2 references.

Terms: Permits attendance at school during off hours , Car recommended , Permits working at another job during off hours .

Estimated Annual Living Allowance: $16,000.
