Context & local partner

Honduras Child Alliance provides community-based educational enrichment and healthy living programs for children living in El Porvenir, Honduras. The Honduras Child Alliance programs help children gain access to opportunities by developing essential skills. Taught by a blended team of Honduran interns and international volunteers, HCA classes reinforce academics, improve literacy in Spanish and English, build competency in computers, and cultivate explorations of science and the arts. By fostering self-expression, leadership talents, and employment possibilities, we nourish confidence and self-esteem. With support from international volunteers, donors, and like-minded organizations, programs are provided at 3 community locations at no cost to the students.

Mission description :

The House Manager is similar to a 'resident assistant' in a university dormitory and helps to support the international volunteers. In this role, the House Manager is part of the in-country Leadership Team and works in collaboration with the Education Coordinator and Admin Manager. The House Manager also volunteers in the classrooms with the rest of the team but will have time built into their schedule for their managerial responsibilities.

The two highest priorities of the House Manager are to (1) Support the safety and health of the volunteers by helping to maintain security and cleanliness protocols, and (2) Ensure that volunteers are behaving in ways that maintain the good reputation of Honduras Child Alliance within its community of El Porvenir. The House Manager will also help with welcoming and orienting new volunteers, facilitating a monthly social event for its Honduran interns and international volunteers to enjoy time together, reporting any needed repairs at the volunteer house, collaborating with the other managers on outreach activities, and more!

Key skills needed:

  • Sense of humor and sense of responsibility!
  • Good physical and mental health
  • Energetic and upbeat personality.
  • Resilient and able to pivot when plans need to change quickly.
  • Excellent communication skills (both speaking and listening).
  • Intermediate level of English and Spanish.
  • Ability to identify a clean kitchen (even inside the refrigerators!) and to make and maintain a cleaning schedule for volunteers at the volunteer houses. (Note that the house is also professionally cleaned once each week.)
  • Able to ask for help: The House Manager has lots of support but we need to know if anything comes up.
  • A commitment to follow the guidelines and protocols at HCA and to understand and be able to explain to others why each rule is important.

Commitment :

The House Manager receives a private room and private bath at the Beach House volunteer house. This includes wifi access. In addition, the House Manager receives a stipend of 1000 HNL per week to purchase food and other necessities. The House Manager also has the opportunity to suggest, get involved in, and facilitate special projects (dental teams, food distributions, building projects, etc.) with the rest of the Leadership Team.

Typically a 12-month commitment is requiered (minimum 9 months!)
