The Bukit Lawang Trust is a Non Government Organisation based in Bukit Lawang, North Sumatra. The trust building is a community centre which provides free education to people of all ages from both the local community and farther afield in Sumatra. Through the Education Programme we deliver English Language education to students between the ages of 4 and 20 however all ages are welcome as we believe you are never too young or too old to learn!
The programme aims to enhance the English education, through the delivery of our Kindergarten classes and Afternoon English classes.
- Kindergarten Classes: Part of the education programme is the facilitation and delivery of two Kindergarten classes, our 'Big Stars' and our 'Little Stars'. These classes are delivered in keeping with the national curriculum of Indonesia and run by three permanent staff teachers here at the school (Rasimah, Ida & Butet). For two days a week (Thursdays & Fridays) volunteers on the Education Programme will teach these classes.
- Afternoon English Classes: In the afternoons the Trust delivers English language tuition to over 100 students from seven different local communities. These classes are planned and delivered by volunteers on the Education Programme under the supervision of the Head of Education.
Volunteers will work with local teachers, staff, and other volunteers as well as our full time volunteers who manage the Education and Conservation Programmes. You will be provided with everything you need to plan, develop and facilitate your classes to the best of your ability, however if you want to bring your own teaching aids this is always welcome!
As a volunteer on the Education programme you can expect to live in an incredibly beautiful area, right on the edge of the Leuser ecosystem and in the heart of a dynamic and fun filled community centre in Bukit Lawang! Outside of the classroom there are Action Days and festivals to plan and organise as well as graduation ceremonies for students! When you are not working, the village of Bukit Lawang has an excellent night life and there are many guest houses and jungle trek providers in the local area for those weekend get always!
A Day at the Trust:
Volunteering at the Trust is no gap year holiday, our volunteers typically work from 08:00 to 18:00 on week days, and occasionally on weekends for training events and action days. We maintain an ethos of hard work and selfless commitment and all of our volunteers are here to serve the local community. However, that doesn’t stop us having a life changing experience whilst were at it! A typical day starts at 07:00 with breakfast. This is prepared by our amazing Hub Chef Fitri, and is served until 08:00. At 0800 is our morning meeting. This happens every weekday and includes all of the operations staff and volunteers. Here any extra tasks or responsibilities will be shared out by the program managers. On Monday, we have a Hub meeting where all of the staff join as well as our Director of Operations, who gives an update on the week ahead and our progress so far. Following this, you will begin your sessions. If you are on the ESL program, you may be teaching or assisting in Kindergarten, which begins at 08:30 or you may be teaching English classes in the afternoon, which start at 14:00. For conservation volunteers on the Youth Ranger or YSE program, you will be delivering sessions in the afternoons, so the morning is your planning and preparation time. Lunch is served at 13:00 each day. Weekends are your own, however occasionally, for example on events such as volunteer induction, phase review and volunteer debrief you will be required to work. Your program manager will give you plenty of prior warning if you are required to work on a weekend. The weekends are a great opportunity to explore North Sumatra! Many of our volunteers have gone on weekend jungle trekking, white water rafting, walking with the elephants and more! In the evenings we run a cooking rota, so we all take it in turns to cook for each other. This is a great way to try lots of exciting international recipes, and often the Indonesian staff join in to try new foods! Extra activities include several aerobics sessions a week, ran by our very own Director of Operations Sam! As well as a weekly running club, movie nights, karaoke and pub quiz!
