ORGANIZATION: Idealist.org

Recruiting Organization: Goodwill Northern New England AmeriCorps Programs

The mission of Next Charter School is to meet the needs of students not fully served within a traditional high school educational program and to employ a system of instructional and assessment practices that values competency, inquiry, flexibility, and the social nature of learning so that all students will graduate and initiate post-secondary learning options. Next operates under the following precept: "One size does not fit all."

The primary role of the AmeriCorps member is to work directly with students. Everyone at Next helps to define, shape, and guide the organization. As a result, members participate in staff meetings, exhibitions, morning and closing meetings, special education meetings, field experiences, team challenges, and public outreach. Depending on knowledge, skill, and interest, members can operate as a co-teacher, 1:1 academic coach, club facilitator, or advisor. All members operate a mentoring program to support student achievement and run small group executive functioning support classes. Lastly, members attend monthly student-parent meetings to support students’ growth and report on their progress.

Granite State Service Corps

In the Granite State Service Corps, direct service AmeriCorps members serve at-risk youth across New Hampshire. Many Granite State youth have been impacted by trauma and Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs), which, without proper support, can negatively affect success, health, and functioning long-term.

The good news? The impacts of ACEs can be counteracted, and one of those "counter-ACEs" is relationships. The Granite State Service Corps aims to introduce stability and positive relationships into the lives of at-risk middle and high school youth by pairing them with AmeriCorps member mentors, who regularly meet one-on-one with a caseload of ten students to increase their resiliency, social and emotional skills, and self-sufficiency--in essence, serving the "whole child."

Members are placed at host site organizations across the Granite State, from the Seacoast’s Dover and Rochester to Tilton, by the lakes and mountains, to southern New Hampshire’s cities of Concord, Manchester, and Nashua. Host sites include schools like Next Charter School and Kreiva Academy; community organizations such as the Dover Housing Authority and Nashua Police Athletic League; and afterschool programs like the Boys & Girls Club of Manchester.
