Recruiting Organization: Amedisys Hospice - Masontown, Pa.

"I’m honored to call him," were the words of Veteran Volunteer Irving Rice, when he

was asked to make companionship calls to a local WWII veteran hospice patient. A Viet Nam veteran himself, Irving understands the importance of having fellow veterans available for our veterans on hospice.

Although Covid-19 has greatly limited in-person encounters, the Amedisys Hospice We Honor Veterans program has continued to be an in-person part of our veteran services. It is a vital part of what we offer veterans as it affords us an opportunity to express our gratitude for their military service.

Veteran volunteers accompany the Volunteer Coordinator and other team members (Chaplain, Bereavement Coordinator, Social Worker, Nurses, and Aides when available) to conduct the veteran pinning ceremonies. Having another veteran there to honor them remains a very special component for veteran patients and their families. Our nurses and aides consistently report back after return visits that the patients tell them about the experience and have their framed certificate displayed in a prominent place.

Due to current Medicare guidelines under the federal mandate, all Amedisys volunteers (even those doing remote work) are required to be vaccinated against Covid-19. Having this vaccination status is one way that we have been able to continue with in-person pinning ceremonies for our veteran patients.

Sadly, for several months, prior to the vaccine becoming available, this service was

suspended to protect our patients, volunteers, and staff. We are grateful for the opportunity to have vaccinated volunteers like Irving there to recognize the sacrifices of our veteran hospice patients.

Remote opportunities to be involved are also available through the companionship calls or tuck-in calls. The latter are once per week calls on Fridays to ensure that patients have the necessary supplies and medications in place for the weekend. Volunteers report what is needed to our staff.

Training is provided for all volunteer services.

If you are or know a Veteran with a passion for caring for fellow veterans who is fully vaccinated against Covid-19 please contact us.

Coverage areas includes:

Greene County and a small portion of Fayette County in Southwest Pennsylvania.
