Hello from the Wilderness and Recreation Department in the Kawishiwi Ranger District of Superior National Forest. We are actively recruiting individuals who are passionate about preserving and maintaining America's public lands. Our volunteer program is essential to our mission of providing a unique Wilderness experience to the public who visit our nearly 1.1 million acre Wilderness of pristine waterways and boreal forest.
Volunteers will be working with U.S. Forest Service Wilderness Rangers to perform all Wilderness related duties. These include, but are not limited to: Wilderness patrols, campsite maintenance, portage/trail maintenance and construction (both inside and outside of wilderness), monitoring surveys and occasional developed recreation site maintenance.
Working and traveling in the BWCAW is strenuous and requires both physical and mental toughness. Volunteers must be able to camp and work up to 8 days at a time in all inclement weather.
A typical schedule will consist of 8 days on with six days off, but volunteers must be available to work with a fluid schedule. All camping gear and tools will be provided by the Forest Service.
The Forest Service will provide the following trainings:
- First Aid/CPR
- Crosscut saw use
- Basic hand tool use/maintenance
- On the job trail and campsite maintenance
- Canoe/Watercraft operation
Free housing in our dorm style apartment units is available to volunteers. Camping is also available at one of our developed campgrounds.
Volunteers will receive a daily stipend for each day worked. Daily amount to be determined.
Start and end dates are flexible, but we would like at least a 2 to 3 month commitment.
