The volunteer(s) will live and work at the Bass Harbor Head Light Station , operated by the National Park Service (NPS). The light station is the 5 th most visited site in the park, seeing over 180,000 visits during the summer months. The position involves being outdoors for long periods of time in various weather conditions to contact visitors outside of the lighthouse. No tours of the interior or formal interpretive programs will be offered. The volunteer(s) will provide basic information to park visitors about the park and its resources, monitor parking issues and report accidents, as well as perform minor grounds keeping and building warden duties. The position is expected to last from mid-May through mid-October. The position will be primarily supervised within the Visitor Experience & Education division.
The NPS will provide furnished housing within the late 1850s lighthouse. The keeper’s quarters has indoor plumbing, a fully functional modern kitchen, and electricity. Landline telephone service is available however internet and cell service are not. In addition to the kitchen, the living room and dining room and a half bath complete the first-floor layout. Three bedrooms and full bath are on the second floor. A small rear patio with picnic table provides some privacy and outdoor refuge with beautiful views of the Gulf of Maine and surrounding islands.
The light station is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and the view from the lighthouse and of the lighthouses are one of the top 3 photographed places in Maine. One standard sized parking spot will be available for the volunteer’s vehicle. Nearby towns of Bass Harbor and Southwest Harbor have grocery stores and gas stations.
