The Volunteer Program is a valuable asset to the recreation program at Mount Rogers. Visitor satisfaction is dramatically enhanced when someone is available to talk with them and answer their questions. At the same time, volunteer satisfaction is greatly increased when they feel their contribution makes a difference. The following is a brief description of the volunteer duties that have been found to make a difference to visitors.

All campground hosts are asked to be available four to 5 days a week. Since our peak visitor days are Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, days off will be scheduled for weekdays, usually Monday, Tuesday, and/or Wednesday. Couples will be scheduled with the same days off.

In some cases, it may become necessary to request your assistance in other areas of responsibility within the recreation area beyond the job you signed up for. We appreciate your understanding and cooperation when this happens.

Raccoon Branch has drinking water, 2 bathhouses with flush toilets, and a large field for games or group picnics. There are no showers in the bathhouses. The campground host sites offer water/30 AMP electric/sewer hookup. The host sites are attractive and accommodate most RVs. Accommodating a large class A motorhome is a challenge on these sites. See the campground at www.recreation.gov for photos and maps.

The full service town of Marion, VA is a 20 minute drive and the community of Sugar Grove is less than 5 minutes away. Sugar Grove has fuel, post office, and convenience items. Hosts are provided with a landline phone for communication and a fax machine for updating reservations. Satellite TV is available if you have your own service. Cell phone coverage is not available in the campground and the nearest service is at our headquarters (10 minutes). A volunteer trail camp (15 minutes) is available for laundry facilities.
