Join us in the spectacular Wallowa Mountains of northeast Oregon as a Wilderness Ranger Intern/Volunteer! Over 350,000 acres and 500 miles of trails in the Eagle Cap Wilderness provide a variety of landscapes and routes from moderate low elevation day hikes to alpine scrambles.
We are recruiting a 2-4 person crew, that will work independently and along side professional USFS Wilderness Rangers. Duties will include: providing visitor information, campsite rehabilitation and restoration, resource monitoring, and trail maintenance. Backcountry and wilderness trips may range from day hikes to 10-day trips. Intern will primarily work from a remote base camp in the Lakes Basin Management Area for 9-10 days hitches.
This opportunity is available from Mid-June to Mid-September. A minimum of a 6-week commitment within this timeframe is required; preference will be given to longer-term applicants.
Housing is available in a bunk house near Wallowa Lake, and reimbursement for food and incidental expenses may be possible. Some equipment and uniforms will be provided.
We are looking for individuals with a willingness and ability to communicate effectively with visitors from a variety of backgrounds; flexibility; ability to hike 8 to 10 miles a day; lift up to 50 pounds; basic backcountry skills; and the desire to work within a wilderness landscape and help protect its values.
