U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service

  • A group opportunity. Invite your friends.

Bayou Cocodrie National Wildlife Refuge is near Ferriday, Louisiana, and is comprised mainly of forested bottomlands and managed wetlands. The refuge is a haven for Louisiana black bear, forest breeding birds, and many other wildlife and plants. St. Catherine Creek National Wildlife Refuge is located along the Mississippi River just south of Natchez, Mississippi. It is well known for the thousands of wading birds, waterfowl, and forest birds, which utilize the dense flooded areas, swamps, bottomland forests, and uplands. The headquarters office for both refuges is at St. Catherine Creek NWR.

We are seeking local volunteers from the Natchez or Vidalia area to remove litter and excessive vegetation (1-3 hours per week) on the northernmost unit of St. Catherine Creek NWR and at multiple entrances at Bayou Cocodrie NWR. Duties as assigned by the refuge manager include removal of litter, woody debris, and vegetation; reporting of damage to signs/kiosks/gates; collection/restock of visitor use cards and harvest tags from the refuge kiosks.

About U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service

5275 Leesburg Pike, MS: NWRS Visitor Services, Bailey’s Crossroads, VA 22041, US

Mission Statement

Working with others to conserve, protect and enhance fish, wildlife and plants and their habitats for the continuing benefit of the American people.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is the premier government agency dedicated to the conservation, protection, and enhancement of fish, wildlife and plants, and their habitats. We are the only agency in the federal government whose primary responsibility is the conservation and management of these important natural resources for the American public.

The agency includes both the National Wildlife Refuge System and the National Fish Hatchery System.

The Service's origins date back to 1871 when Congress established the U.S. Fish Commission to study the decrease in the nation’s food fishes and recommend ways to reverse that decline. (More on our history below.) Today, we are a diverse and largely decentralized organization, employing about 8,000 dedicated professionals working out of facilities across the country.
