TNMCorps volunteers collect and update structures data for The National Map using our online mapping application. Structures include schools, hospitals, post offices, police stations, cemeteries, and other important public buildings. TNMCorps volunteers primarily engage in internet research and data entry. They check the location of existing structure points against aerial imagery to verify that they are in the correct location and confirm that the name and address information are correct using authoritative sources. Volunteers also add missing structure points to the map and remove points for structures that no longer exist.
By updating and verifying structures data across all 50 states, Puerto Rico, the US Virgin Islands, and now Guam, American Samoa, and the Northern Mariana Islands, volunteers are making significant contributions to USGS National Structures Database, The National Map, and ultimately U.S. Topo Maps! TNMCorps volunteers earn virtual badges for participating and are recognized for their contributions (with their permission) via USGS and The National Map social media.
If you have access to the internet and are willing to dedicate some time editing map data, we hope you will consider participating! Since this is a remote computer-based opportunity, you can participate from anywhere you have reliable internet access. This is an ongoing virtual opportunity, and we do not have any hours or length of service requirements. TNMCorps volunteers are welcome to spend as much or as little time editing data as suits their schedules for as long as they feel like participating. If you need information on tracking volunteer hours for community service or a school project, please reach out to us at nationalmapcorps@usgs.gov. This project is suitable for ages 16 and over.
After your application is accepted, we will be reaching out to you via nationalmapcorps@usgs.gov with instructions on how to get started, so we recommend adding that address to your contacts list to ensure our messages get through. If you don't hear from us within a day after we've accepted your application, be sure to check your spam or trash folders for any messages from nationalmapcorps@usgs.gov.
**Since this opportunity is with the U.S. Geological Survey, which is not one of the federal land management agencies that participates in the Interagency Pass Program, your contributions to The National Map Corps will not count towards a Volunteer Pass. You can get more information about the agencies that do participate here: https://store.usgs.gov/node/189 **
